Understanding Czech law
How Czech probate works
Czech succession proceedings are part of a civil-law legal system and differ significantly from common-law probate. Understanding the process helps you know what to expect and when to act.

A notary acts as court commissioner
In the Czech Republic, probate proceedings (dědické řízení) are conducted within the civil court system. A notary appointed by the court typically administers the process, identifies heirs, establishes the estate's assets and liabilities, and issues the inheritance decision.

Foreign heirs may often be represented
If you live outside the Czech Republic, you do not necessarily need to travel to Prague. In many situations, you can grant a power of attorney to a lawyer who will appear before the notary on your behalf.

Many matters can be handled remotely by power of attorney where legally and practically possible. Clients outside the Czech Republic do not always need to travel to Prague.

How our fees work
We define the scope and fee structure before paid work begins. The appropriate model depends on the complexity, urgency, documents available and whether the matter is contentious.
An initial intake call of up to 30 minutes may be available to understand the nature of the matter, check whether we may accept it and discuss next steps. Document analysis and formal legal advice are provided after the scope and terms are agreed.
